Bertha von Suttner’s famous novel Die Waffen nieder! was published in 1889 and translated into English in 1892 as Lay Down your arms!. The International bestseller tells the life story of Martha von Tilling and reaches a broad audience.

Professor Barbara Burns from Glasgow, UK, will talk about the first English translation of the novel Lay down your arms! by the eminent Timothy Holmes, who was also the editor of Gray’s Anatomy. His translation helped to spread Suttner’s pacifist views across the world.
Dr Peter van den Dungen and Petra Keppler from the Bertha von Suttner Peace Institute will tell anecdotes out of the life of Baroness Bertha von Suttner, who was also a great lobbyist and journalist and contributed immensely to the fame of The Hague as world-city of Peace and Justice.
